I came into 2026 thinking a lot about birds and bridges. I’d been noticing and sketching these two contrasting and deeply connected ideas in my journals a lot in the final months of 2025, reflecting on the skylines I grew up with along in my hometown along the Chesapeake Bay. I’m always most at peace near water, smelling salty air and feeling a slight breeze. 

When I shared with a friend that I’d been thinking of and drawing soaring birds and strong bridges so much for a few weeks now, she responded, “Of course you are. They mean freedom and connection – the two things you’re always striving for.” That noticing from a loved one helped me shape my perspective and vision for 2026 – a year in which I’m boldly leaning towards things that feel like the balance of a bird and a bridge. I want to move closer to anything that makes me feel both free and connected.

This piece captures the freedom and connection of a flock of birds, soaring together in a unique curved frame. To me, that combination of freedom and connection is what leads to a calm nervous system.
